World AIDS day celebrated across the country

Sibusiso Ndlovu Acornhoek- World Aids day is celebrated by millions of people around the world on 1, December every year, the celebration aims at raising awareness of the Aids disease caused by the spread of HIV infection. While the day is been celebrated everywhere in the world, young people from Acornhoek turned in numbers to Love Life community centre on Sunday first of December to celebrate world Aids day. The event was aimed at educating about HIV and Aids disease. The pandemic remains a big problem in the world every year the figures of people who are affected by the disease keeps on increasing, Statistics South Africa, 2013 reveals that initiation of almost 2 million South Africans onto treatment. Owet Mabunda is the co-ordinate of HIV and Aids Educational Programme at Love Life, Owet says it is too hard to recruit young into their programme as most of the young people are ignorant. “Even when you visit them in their schools and at their homes you could see the level of their response that these people they don’t care, we offer a lot of programmes here at Love Life. We teach people how to operate a computer and after completing their course we give them certificates, but people they don’t want to join the programme” explain Owet. A 27-year-old Rejoice Mhlaleni who asked to be named has been living with the disease for the past 5 years now. She says life is too hard for people who are infected by HIV/Aids as they are discriminated in their communities, “I call for more education in order to raise more community awareness about the pandemic, the fact that I’m infected it doesn’t mean that I should let others get this disease too. I must help them to prevent from getting the pandemic”, she concludes.
